Clegg Memorial Garden is located off N 400 E in Lafayette, Indiana. If you’re coming from I-65 you turn left on 200 N, drive passed Wildcat Creek Winery, right at the 4-way stop, and left into the parking lot after the ‘S’ curve.
The Clegg Memorial Garden is also known as Jerry E. Clegg Botanic Garden. This location is one of the most unique parks for hiking in Lafayette. The property is filled with heavily wooded (and somewhat narrow) trails through hills and ravines. Multiple wooden decks are located throughout the park with benches that overlook the beautiful scenery which includes the aforementioned ravines and trails along with Wildcat Creek.
History – Originally the park was a private property purchased by Harold and Ruth Clegg in the 1930’s. It became a local park open to the public when their only son passed away. After his death a dear family friend suggested they turn the beautiful property into a park named after him (Jerry E. Clegg). April 18th, 1965 marks the day the park was officially opened to the public.
After 48 years the Clegg Memorial Garden management was transferred to new owners in 2014. As of writing this (February, 2023) the property is owned and operated by NICHES Land Trust. When the transfer occurred the private home located on the property was transformed into the NICHES Land Trust administrative offices.
